‘He loved mustard fish’

Shiboprosad Mukherjee, along with co-director Nandita Roy, was supposed to begin a film with Rishi Kapoor. Raghuvendra Singh takes down his story

"Before the first quarter of 2018 drew to a close, it was decided that Rishi Kapoor would play the lead in our Hindi directorial launchpad. The production house in Mumbai had sent across the DVD of our popular Bengali film to him, which he immediately agreed to do in Hindi. The script was ready and we were about to begin our meetings when the disastrous news of him having taken ill surfaced. He left for New York for his treatment and the project was pushed back by a good couple of months.
“In February, 2019, when he was slowly getting better, I texted him after a long gap. He took no time to reply. His answer was, ‘Both Neetu and I have seen the film, not once, but twice. We had tears in our eyes’. He told me as per the doctors treating him, he could return well by end-July or August (2019). We immediately got in touch with the production house, who said we shouldn’t delay the project any further. It was mutually decided upon that we would get things finalised in New York itself. Rishiji was more than happy with the idea.
“Priya Aven, representative of the production house, Nandita Roy, my co-director and I boarded a flight to NY on July 2. Upon reaching NY, I called up to say we were there. He said he should be meeting us at our hotel and not the other way round, as that is what an actor usually does with his directors. We met at Hotel Sofitel on July 5. He was a bundle of energy that afternoon. His loud guffaws still ring in my ears. He laughed and said since he underwent blood transfusion, he wasn’t sure if all his actor’s blood was gone! He was excited like a child and said if the role demanded him to learn something new, he was game, as he had a lot of free time. I could feel that he was dying to get back to what he loved the most - acting.
“After the work-related conversation was almost over, Rishiji asked what we were doing that evening. He took no time to invite us over to his place and even asked what drink we preferred. He pronounced that his favourite was Black Label. We had taken with us two handwoven shawls for them and they were happy to accept them at their home in New York. He admired the kantha stitches and said all the raw talent came from Bengal. Meanwhile, he had poured me and the rest a drink. I had asked for a smaller one and he snapped at me for that. There was nothing called a small drink, he said. We then went to an Asian-Chinese restaurant, where Rishiji ordered food for 10 though we were just five people. All the while, I noticed how concerned Neetuji was. Her eyes were always fixed on him, what he was eating, on which side of the road he was… it was as if someone was protecting a child. I couldn’t help but admire the beautiful relationship they shared.
“That evening, the conversation mostly revolved around Kolkata, Santiniketan and of course, Bengali food. Rishiji wanted to shoot in Kolkata and was yearning to be in Tagore’s abode in Santiniketan. For the first time, I learnt that he was a lover of the famed mustard fish that Bengal is known for. He said we must work out what to eat during the shoot and I told him about my production boy, Ganesh, who is a cook par excellence. Before leaving NY, I had called him as per his wish. He suggested that we could shoot one part of the film at a Mumbai studio upon his return and the rest by winter as he wasn’t comfortable shooting in the summer months.
“Once he returned to India, we resumed talks regarding the rest of the cast. He once told me that during the press meet of a film, a Bengali journalist had suggested that Neetuji and he should work in the Hindi version of Belaseshe. He asked me for the film and said he was just not into the OTT platforms. He didn’t know how to browse through them and that I should set it up for him, even though the film is available on digital platforms.
“Every time I was in Mumbai, he would ask me to come over. Once, during a conversation on food, he expressed the desire to savour some mustard fish. He wanted to meet my wife, Zinia, who is a good cook. He invited us over to their residence, Krishna Raj and asked us to cook a Bengal rice-fish meal for them. I had packed Bekti fillets and a big hilsa cut into pieces in an ice box. Since it was inconvenient to cook in an unfamiliar kitchen, Zinia made fish fries and mustard ilish at our sister, Indrani’s place in Worli. Even before we were done with cooking, calls started coming in by the dozens. Rishiji was very punctual about time and also a complete foodie. Once we reached their home, Rishiji was excited like a child and Neetuji said she was hoping to learn the Bengali way of cooking fish for the man of the house. That was not to be. Soon, we settled in for an adda. That evening, Kunal Kapoor, son of Shashi Kapoor, joined in. The conversation revolved around the Calcutta of Raj Kapoor and of Shashi Kapoor. The family had immense respect for the city for and the connection that Raj Kapoorji shared with it. Neetuji also spoke about shooting for Yaraana at Netaji Indore Stadium and the excited Kolkata crowd that lined the streets to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars. They were surprised to learn from us that Fairlawn Hotel in Kolkata where Shashiji would put up during his long stays in the city still had a room named after him. It was an evening of discoveries, and more discoveries.
“We have since been talking about movies and more and I was concerned about his health after I read that he had taken ill in Delhi. Every time I would hear such news, I would leave him a message and he would reply much to my relief. After a bout of Rishiji’s illness, the film got pushed back further as he was already shooting for one. On March 26, we last spoke when he said he would like to begin the shoot fast. On April 21, I texted him saying I wanted to speak to him. That was for the first time he didn’t reply. I would be lying if I wrote that I wasn’t worried. Some stories are destined to remain incomplete; ours is one. "

“Rishi Kapoor was a zindadil person” - Umesh Shukla

-Raghuvendra Singh

It’s surely a tough time in Bollywood as the industry has lost its two precious gems, Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan Khan, within a span of 48 hours. Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor passed away earlier today, leaving several Bollywood insiders shocked.

We spoke exclusively with Umesh Shukla, who has directed Rishi Kapoor in 102 Not Out and All Is Well. Speaking about his experience of working with the actor, he said, “People used to say that vo bahut gusse wale hain (he has a short-temper) how you are tackling but I never experienced even a single such moment. He was a lovely person to work with. Till the end he was enjoying this inning of his life. We shot All is Well in Shimla and everyday after the shoot, we used to sit together and he used to say that now I'm getting some good work to do. Earlier I used to dance and sing around the trees in same Shimla. He always used to enjoy his work. He was so inquisitive on the set that yeh Aisa kyun Kar rahe ho (why are we doing this way). He was a spontaneous actor.”

Umesh Shukla and Rishi Kapoor even went to the Golden temple together once and he shared a great bond with the actor. Talking about Rishi further, he said,  “He was a zindadil person. He was an outstanding person. He used to live in present. He used to make everyone laugh on the sets. When he was in costume and in front of camera, he was in character but as soon as makeup was gone, he was back to himself. He never carried his characters off the set. If you don't call him for fifteen days, he will call himself and ask, kya yaar, phone Nahin aaya tera (why didn’t you call me!). He was a very emotional person. He used to call at home. Vo khane aur peene dono ke bahut shaukeen the (He was passionate about food and drink). He was always curious that what's new happening, he used to discuss that. Food and drink was his bahana to sit and talk. He was aware of everything.”

The filmmaker had brought Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor together in 2018 with 102 Not Out after almost 27 years and he was planning to do something similar again, “Before the lockdown I had called him and said that I'm coming to meet you. So he said that quarantine khatam hone do then milte hain. I had narrated that idea to Bachchan saab also. Now I don't know. Kuch samajh mein nahin aa Raha hai (right now I’m too numb and can’t understand what to do).”

Umesh added, “Unhone Kabhi umar ka bhed nahin rakha tha (he didn’t made you feel like a younger person). He always used to guide me. I don't have words to describe him. If he had anything in his heart, he never hesitated from expressing it. Be it anywhere and in front of anyone. He was so blunt. Our relations was not of that director and actor. He made me so comfortable that I was also able to express myself. I will miss him a lot.”

Exclusive: Huma Qureshi talks about Irrfan Khan as she expresses her grief

-Raghuvendra Singh

The film industry is in a sudden shock with the demise of the great actor Irrfan Khan. The actor took his last breath today in Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai while battling colon infection. Several B-town celebrities took to their social media accounts to express their thoughts, experiences and their grief about the great human being and a par excellence actor. Right from Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan to Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Kartik Aaryan all have written about the thespian and offered their condolences to his family, as they can’t step out and meet them personally in this state of lockdown.

Huma Qureshi who has worked with Irrfan in Nikkhil Advani’s D-Day spoke to us exclusively about her working experience with the actor and also how deeply she’s upset with this huge and sudden loss. Huma spoke highly about the star, “Just a legend. A man who with his pure talent inspired many to follow through their dreams. Massive loss to the entire Indian film industry and Hollywood,” she furthers adds, “His work, his legacy is unparalleled. Guiding light for so many of us. Condolences to his family.”

We couldn’t agree more. The actor’s work was phenomenal and he was surely an inspiration to many aspiring actors.

It’s difficult to think about cinema without Irrfan” -Homi Adajania

-Raghuvendra Singh

Today the industry is surely coping up with a huge loss of a great actor, Irrfan Khan. Irrfan’s fine act has left a vacuum in the industry and he is surely irreplaceable. Irrfan was last seen in Angrezi Medium. The film was directed by Homi Adajania and he spoke to us exclusively about experience with the actor.

Homi was fortunate enough to work with the thespian for his swan song. Irrfan had resumed shooting for the film after almost a year, as he was being treated in London for a long time. When the filmmaker was asked about Irrfan’s working mantra during Angrezi Medium, as he had joined a film after a hiatus, here’s what he had to say, “When Irrfan Khan walked onto the set on the first day of shoot, it had been a year since he had acted as he had been undergoing treatment for his cancer. I jokingly asked him if he hadn’t forgotten how to act. He seriously replied that he could well have. We didn’t just laugh at this, we cracked up hysterically. Then we looked at each other, abruptly stopped laughing and he said that he wasn’t joking. This was our relationship. Regardless of how tense or stressful a situation seemed, we always saw the absurdity of life and something about everything would always make us laugh from our bellies.”

Homi further adds a funny anecdote about Irrfan and says how much he loved his job and his passion to act in movies, “Towards the end of our shoot, Irrfan told me that he had changed deeply as a person. He had redefined pain as another sensation in his mind. It wasn’t pleasant he said, but it was different, and he was cool with this as it wasn’t pain in his mind. He didn’t want fame or stardom anymore, but when he said “Yaar Homi mujhe acting se bohut mohabbat hai” (I have a deep love for acting), he wasn’t acting, I could feel his words. It’s difficult to think about cinema without thinking about Irrfan and the craft he loved so much gave him so much joy and his audiences somehow felt this same joy.Irrfan seemed to be watching the circus of life from the outside. He wasn’t interested in jumping into the thick of it anymore. I asked him why he wanted to shoot considering he was undergoing his treatment. His retort was a simple “I’m not dead na… Toh let me live doing what I love”. And this is exactly what he did. Ironically the crew looked to him for strength rather than the other way around. You see, Irrfan never made his problem anyone else’s. I always knew he was a fantastic actor, but more importantly I got a chance to cross paths with an incredible human being and I’ll always cherish this.”

It’s surely a huge loss for world cinema and how he made even the most powerful roles look effortless and even made the flawed-characters most loved. We will miss him immensely at the movies.

Exclusive: Nimrat Kaur remembers co-star Irrfan Khan

- Raghuvendra Singh

Irrfan Khan has touched many lives in his career. Any actor who has worked with him, has only spoken with awe and reverence for the actor. Mourning the loss that the industry and the world has faced with the untimely demise of a thespian and a brilliant actor, The Lunchbox co-star, Nimrat Kaur remembers the mighty man in this chat with Filmfare.
Can you recall your first meeting with Irrfan Khan?
Actually the first time I met him was on the set of The Lunchbox. We were shooting for two different scenes and we met at the VT station, where he was shooting his office sequence and I was there to shoot something else. I met him very briefly and I was very intimidated by his presence at that time because I had never met him before. The reality of being in a film opposite him and working with him actually because I didn't have any scenes with him in the film. That actually sank in on that day for the first time. He was very wonderful. He came and said hello to me and I remember he was just in a rush and he used to walk very fast. He was in-between things at that time. And I actually got to spend time with him truly when we went to Cannes Film Festival (2013). That's actually when we spent time and I remember when the film had premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and everything was so overwhelming, it was looking like beginning of something very big, I got a bit overwhelmed and I asked him, How do you handle so much adulation? I don't know how to handle what's coming right now. He laughed I remember and said, just enjoy the good times and makes the most of them because the bad times are what are always around, struggles are always around and life is all about struggle and these are the gifts we get. So make sure that you make most of these gifts of life. I'll always remember that. He told me to never be shy of celebrating.
What did you learn from him - as a human being, as an actor?
To be honest, one thing that I saw and I'll never forget that he was a man deeply connected to his roots. He never forgot where he came from and he came from a middle class family, he never pretended to be anyone else, he was a very keen observer of life and had a sparkling sense of humour. Everyone is aware of his sharp sense of humour. And I'll never forget just his presence and how comfortable he made everyone around. That is something that I learned from him and I always wanted to keep close to my heart and mind that it's easy to be a star but it's difficult to be a good human being and star.
Were you in touch with him after his health issue happened?
No, I wasn't. I sent him a few emails. I used to get to know about him from Ritesh Batra, who was in touch with his family. Ritesh and I were talking on the phone just last night because he had got to know that he wasn't doing too well. Ritesh is in New York at the moment. How would you like to remember Irrfan Saab?
There are very few actors who become a personal loss for everyone. The loss of our Irrfan Khan and the impact that has... my mom called me in this morning and her voice was heavy because he has passed away and she knew. That impact and that effect every personality or actor or star or anyone has, you know, when it becomes personal that this person is not around anymore. That is the effect and that is the legacy Irrfan Khan has left for us that he is personal gain and a personal loss now and that is true for anyone who watched his films, who interviewed him, who had a cup of tea with him. https://www.filmfare.com/news/bollywood/exclusive-nimrat-kaur-remembers-co-star-irrfan-khan-40517-1.html

Exclusive: Kareena Kapoor Khan opens up about co-star Irrfan Khan's demise

-Raghuvendra Singh

Irrfan Khan’s demise shocked the entire nation earlier today. The actor was admitted to the hospital yesterday and was suffering through a colon infection. In the presence of a few members of his family and a couple of friends, Irrfan’s last rites were performed in Mumbai today. A lot of celebs mourned the demise of this actor par excellence. His Angrezi Medium co-star Kareena Kapoor Khan spoke to Filmfare exclusively about the same.

She said, “ It was on my bucket list... After I saw him in Maqbool. I just had be in the frame with this electrifying actor, a persona that was incomparable when the camera was switched on. I had the pleasure of spending some time with his wife too at the shoot. Humble but even though they were going through so much at the time ...I will never forget her smile. She was the true soldier is what I gathered. My heart swells for her but life can be cruel and the only truth we know is that we will go one day. Irrfan is at peace and in turn his films will warm the cockles of our heart forever. Thank you for your great work only small humble way I would like to say.” RIP Irrfan Khan!
