ShahRukh Khan's statement about new born AbRam

Amidst all the noise that has been going around, the sweetest is the one made by our new-born baby, AbRam.

He was born prematurely by several months but has finally come home.

Gauri and our whole family have been dealing with his health issues for a long time now.

As a family our silence on this subject has been because of the personal nature of emotional strife that we have been going through due to his health.

We wish to make a special mention and thank Dr. Jatin Shah for his expertise and contribution. We also wish to thank all the other doctors, nurses and medical staff who have made his life possible.  As trying were the times, we never lost hope that life always brings with it.

Just to put the record straight there was no sex determination for our child. The baby was born much before the speculations of ‘sex determination’ and other  ‘issues’ pertaining to the same were being raised in the media by some organisations.

Suffice to say his coming home puts to rest completely false and at times insensitive claims of sex determination and alleged illegalities.

We also apologise to all those other doctors and hospitals who had to face unwanted scrutiny and questioning by some parties.

Our son is a surrogate baby and the entire process is bound by strict confidentiality. We would appeal to all, to allow us to cherish this private moment as a family.

It seems unfortunate that I have to explain/clarify so many aspects for our new-born baby. Wish it were just a simple message of happiness on behalf of the family.

They say a baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on. Post this statement, I hope we all move on too.

Was just going through the Mumbai Mirror in the morning and my gaze jammed at a photograph of Ms. Shobha De. My sight froze and there was a smile on my lips and I said ‘Good morning’ to myself. Some faces make your day. It was a column ‘How to be a chick’. Below her pea size photograph was written in bold and big letters ‘DOES ‘RAANJHANAA’ GLORIFY STALKING?’ Well I read that later, though it is my brother’s film. But let me be honest here that Ms. De’s snap invites my or any male’s curiosity much more than my brother’s work, because her labour in literature eases us to lay her face to the fables that she has engraved. And in all conscience, whenever you read her stuff, her face flashes endorsing her material. And that’s the case with all the great writers, whether it is Gulzar saab, Rabindranath Tagore, Nida Fazli, Sahir Ludhyanvi, Javed Akhtar, or Shobha De too. The readers always visualize their faces to their respective works. It’s like the old Jenson and Nicholson advertisement that said ‘Whenever you see colour, think of us’.

I moved on. I was curious to read what the queen of soft porns had to write about a humble ‘Raanjhana’. I knew this article was unlike the other articles which gave the film 4 and a half stars or 4 plus. And honestly, I too was too tired of getting great appraisals for the film, reading prodigious reviews, people greeting me, congratulating me.. It was getting more monotonous than living with a same partner. But ‘Raanjhana’ was disturbing someone apart from Kamaal R Khan, whom we disregarded and discounted for all his intelligence and dumbness. And it was the lady I admired the most, not for her work but for her looking attractive and gorgeous and being as old as India.

Our Maam wrote that everyone is going ga ga over the film ‘Raanjhana’. Yes, it is true. But how can we stop that?  It certainly is not a paid campaign. We cannot deploy police force or take out morchas if people are enjoying the film and going GaGa over it. But isn’t acceptance of a film a truly democratic format? Or that way acceptance of a leader or a star too. We worship Sachin Tendulkar for his merits. You may love or hate Bala Saheb, but the mourners care five figs for your opinions and starved thoughts and throng the streets to form a glimpse of a never before seen a sea of heads. Much bigger than Ripley’s believe it or not. I did not personally like ‘Dabang’, Ready’, ‘Body Guard’, ‘Ek tha tiger’ or so on. But these films went on to fetch 200 crores plus. I hated ‘The life of Pi’ the most. And my friends, contacts and work supports stopped trusting in me for that. Neither did the Oscars care for my belief. And the film swept the numbers and the Oscars. I think, Miss De, if you are trying to rehearse any anarchy for this particular democracy, then the best way is to have a five minute conversation with the average voters. Like Shakira’s hip’s, the audience too don’t lie. The first week closing of ‘Raanjhana’ is a humongous 35 crore plus including the overseas.

Let me start by asking you Maam, where do you find Kundan a demented stalker who’s harrowing an innocent victim? Which part of the film did you find that?? I would be overwhelmed to know that. And I know that this particular film doesn’t deal with teenage sleaze, scandal, lust, obscenity at all. And the reviews it got and is getting are mindless for you as you have mentioned…Agreed, but where do you find the film or its protagonist seriously psychotic? Which portion of the film? If you please let me I shall surely chop them off and apply some balm to you.

And ma’am, what lives or families has Kundan, the protagnist destroyed? Except for Abhay Deol’s death, which was a part of the screenplay and storytelling if you understand? Apart from that which ant or a bee was injured or died in the film?? Neither a boat sank, nor a cycle was robbed.. Except for he himself, who was demolished, destroyed and damaged in the end reminding me of Sydney Carton from Dickens’s ‘Tale of two cities’. And what message are you talking about??? What message is the film sending out? What message have you heard ma’am??? Have people come out liking the film and acclaimed and applauded it or are they spitting out the message that you have half-baked atrociously only to your taste. It is for you to figure that out. You have yourself said that some rave reviews and people making it to be a great love story. What is true??? Please analyse that.

And ma’am, where is Kundan crude and relentless to Zoya? Can you name a scene? Any scene like Shahrukh Khan’s of ‘Anjaane’ or ‘Darr’.. Where he kicks the heroine, slaps her, beats her, and blood, blood, blood and bloody blood… Or a Raj Babbar of ‘Insaaf ka taraazu’ where he slaps Zeenat Aman a number of times.. ties her to the bed and rapes her and then as a pervert tells Padmini Kohapure to strip, unclothe and bare herself and walk naked in front of him at the point of a gun because both the sisters say ‘No’ to him and the elder one is in love with Deepaak Parashar. Did you find Kundan doing anything anywhere closer to these guys? Or like Amitabh Bacchan where when Zeenat Aman says no to him and he holds her painfully tight by her arm and tells her what ‘Laawaaris’ means. I recall the theatre clapped echoingly in reverbs multiplying for over 5 minutes. Was the character of Mr. Bachhan representing the emotions, aspirations of a larger comprising mass of a cine goer? Or that of a Zeenat Aman representing a handful shameless corrupts with white collars discussing destitute hungry children and eating Caviar with Cognac in a 5 star hotel? May be Dhanush represents hopes, desires and the doomed love of a bigger encompassing bulk that has made him a heart throb in the Hindi filmdom called ‘Bollywood’ too. 

Just remind me a scene where Kundan has touched Zoya or forced physics on her.

And then further you say “it’s a wonder she doesn’t throw him off the cliff.” Wait for another 40 minutes honourable maam.., she does get him killed. Your dishonest, crooked and shady cravings and yearnings will come true If you have sit through the film. Who is the victim here maam? The stalker or the stalked? Well I shall come to that later. Where does Kundan embarrass Zoya as you write? Where do you feel Zoya showed embarrassment in any of her expressions? Can you please name a scene? Or with some wrong expressions Sonam has excelled as an actress by default which you have acknowledged and her merit is being credited to Mr. Anand Rai by some inaccuracy.

In which scene is Kundan firm not to take a ‘no’ from Zoya?? On the contrary when she tells him about Akram, he’s the one who goes to her father to coax him to get Zoya married to the love of her life, Akram. He’s the one who hard sells Akram to her father. He spends night in front of the house. In fact he stalks Zoya’s father, more than Zoya, to Masjid, streets, college.. Zoya’s the one who lies to her parents about Akram being a Hindu. Should Zoya have done that? Was it or is It right lying to the parents about marriage? Did that occur to you even once?  Or just Kundan bashing is all that matters.

You further write that ‘Never mind she doesn’t care a fig about Kundan and treats him like a serf and uses him ruthlessly’. Now maam… can you make out what these lines mean..? ‘She doesn’t care a fig about him?’… means that his ‘stalking’, the term you have given to his walk… has no and absolutely zilch impact on Zoya. She’s least frightened of him and leans on him as a friend. Kundan is the least scary man because he’s a nice man who possesses no feudal power on Zoya and ends up a loser. And then your next line is ‘She treats him like a serf’… Who treats who like a serf maam? The stalker or the victim…? And then again you write ‘and she uses him ruthlessly’.. Maam who’s using whom ruthlessly..? The stalker is using the victim or the victim is using the stalker ruthllessly..? Who’s more powerful and impactful amongst the two? Can you figure these from your lines? And then you feel the audience is going teary and touched. Why is the audience going teary and touched? Have they been paid by Eros or Anand Rai to disturb you?.. In a 600 words article you have just repeated in 550 words that “if Kundan would have stopped harassing Zoya so many lives would have been spared..”.. Form some new questions maam. I do not want to ask you again and again that what lives and what families are you talking about?

You thought ‘Raanjhanaa’ was some south Indian name for a girl. Hahahaha.... Then you must be wondering if ‘Heer’ was elder sister of ‘Kheer’… Anyways, let me not laugh at you on your exposure on Hindi literature.. I allow you to express as you have given a lot to the literary work on a specific genre what Shakespeare or Dickens couldn’t and I have enjoyed reading that. So what if you do not know ‘Heer raanjha’, Sassi Punnu’ or Laila Majnu’ but I am sure you know a lot about basic instincts…

And again you are right by mistake that it is a one sided love story… Who said it was a threesome story maam. ’Raanjhana’ is Anand Rai’s world. Please do not find your characters in this film. Zoya loved Akram, and Akram loved Zoya…. Only Kundan loved Zoya and she never loved Kundan.. It is so simple and yet… Why don’t you accept a one sided love story of a man who loved a woman and could not get her…

Maam De, I am sure you must have seen Raj Kapoor’s Bobby. How would you rate the stalking of Raj to Bobby. Is Kundan anywhere closer to what Rishi Kapoor did to Dimple Kapadia in ‘Bobby’? Rishi Kapoor saw her for the first time in his house and there on… he sang a song.. Then goes to her place, then disturbs her in her college and then glares the mirror into her eyes in the library, he doesn’t let her study, he makes her bunk the college.. And then he flungs his own marriage and reaches Goa where Bobby was kept as a captive by her father, and then he elopes with her. She being an underage, even after he knowing that and etc., etc.,.. He does everything what shouldn’t be done morally. Wasn’t that more than what Kundan did to Zoya?? Or let me ask you, did Kundan do more than what Rishi Kapoor did? You do not seem to have any problem with that. Is it because the name of the director was Raj Kapoor?

Recently released ‘Fukrey’, is running to full houses and audiences have raved about the film like ‘Raanjhana’. ‘Fukrey’ just glorifies gambling. The protagonist are school students who have failed umpteen number of times and have not passed.. They are still trying to get leaked question papers at 50,000 cause they don’t want to study.. They want to go to college only to have girlfriends.. He talks to his girlfriend about French kiss and how to do it.. They keep gambling, they sell drugs, And the resolve of the film again comes by gambling.. The fiancé of a character who hates gambling, finally gambles to get money…None of them goes to jail.. And unfortunately here was no Savita bhabhi who could throw the scruples, messages on morals on these 4 boys. I know that wouldn’t bother you much, as your books are in that province and territory. But honestly there is nothing that one should take home from this film. What does this film glorify??? Have you ever thought on this??? Just few days ago I saw you on channels talking against betting in the IPLs, but heard no voice of yours on ‘Fukrey’.. Why???

What is stalking miss De? If we get into finding the right words alternating to stalking, then they mean pestering, irritating, annoyance, following, trailing, nuisance, and aggravation. And they can cause fear, terror, dread, fright, and panic in the person being stalked. Did you by any chance see any of the latter elements in Zoya? Was she too frightened of Kundan? Or did at any point of given time she go through shudders when he called her or met her..? I saw her meeting him with smiles and happiness and on her own will. Zoya is an independent girl who is very clear in venting it out to him anything she felt. She did tell Kundan that they were young when anything between them happened. Now she has moved on.. Doesn’t it happen Miss De that people move on in life with bags, baggages and children on to the next one?? So did Zoya.. Zoya sought help from Kundan all the time.. whether it was her marriage to the other man, or Akram and Kundan was always there to help her out. You again in your crooked thinking feel ‘She used him’. The audience took Kundan as Zoya’s friend from Zoya’s POV…

Miss De, there have been umpteen number of films in the Hollywood about stalking and all have been successful ones. Films like Cape fear, Scream, Singlle white female, Sleeping with the enemy, The hand that rocks the cradle, One hour photo, Taxi driver and Fatal attraction.. But none like you, Miss De have risen a question on what these films encourage.  Only if you knew what your books encourage. Miss De, Missionaries are going to reform the world and they know what it should be and what it shouldn’t be… Leave it to them.. Film makers have jobs to entertain.. Some good and some bad. For me there are writer’s like Enid Blyton and Shobha De. One’s work I would love to gift it to my daughters and the other’s I would want to hide it from them. But both get a shelf in the book shop and both get pictured. What I like and what you hate, both of us care a damn. Because both got buyers.

We loved Amitabh Bacchan in ‘Deewar’ though he glorified Haji Mastaan, we loved him in ‘Shakti’…though he hated his father, and became a smuggler.. Amitabh Bacchan went on to kill someone in ‘Parwaana’ because the lady never loved him.. And that was the onset of a superstar. The audience had lapped him up.   Darr, Anjaam, Baazigar made Shahrukh Khan a super star,… People loved him more as negative.. Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha did what should not be done. I hark back to when Shatrughan Sinha beat the hero, the audience clapped.. They did not take the onus of society on their shoulders. They just loved the characters and knew that it was cinema.. Or else a Robert De Nero playing Al Capone and Al Pacino playing Scarface wouldn’t have been super stars with super hits.  Edward G Robinson wouldn’t have been there for what he had delivered. And according to you maam, then the super stars would have been Arun Govils and Deepikas as they played Ram and Sita.. So maam, regarding the creative art, never assume that you are the master. The audience will determine if you are worthy, masterful or not. Cinema doesn’t reform society but it reflects society.. Its entertainment, entertainment and entertainment.

I am sure if there is a story of some young teenager boy from Malabar Hill who falls in love with a girl from some convent school, and later one fine day he tells the girl “I have to bed you”. And she says no. And he trails her by sending her chocolates, flying down orchids from Thailand, transporting brownies, follows her till cafe coffee day, telling the owner not to take money from her, buys Archie cards, sends her a card every day, and his driver in the Mercedes drops the girl from school to house, and on valentine’s day he goes on his his knees and begs to bed her and she finally says ok.. And the readers of that semi pornographic book say.. How cute…? what a touching love tory.. There are love stories set in Malabar Hill and love stories set in the interiors of Benaras. The viewers are different and the believers are different.

If I have enjoyed anyone’s work in a specific genre after Mastram in Hindi, it has been you maam. The amount of literary work and your contribution is an epitome that people love what people love… We never had objections or hostilities when the soft porns go on to become school books. But a ‘Raanjhaana’ disturbs us…. Why??? Maam, can you answer anyone of these questions..

Where was Kundan wrong when he thought it is his duty to be honest to his teacher in telling that the Akram is Hindu… ?

Where did he go wrong when he said that he shall take Zoya to Akram… ?

During the political episodes, did he once tell her that he loves her or want her?

After Akram’s death, didn’t he always looked at her with purity?

Infact when she tells him that she loves him.. he withdraws and tells her don’t love me… Don’t you feel he was the victim rather than whom he made the victim..?

Why did he die??

Because of whom did he die???

Don’t think too much about cinema. It’s just a matter of what’s in frame and what’s out of it… For both, the maker and the viewer… If you sit down thinking that ‘Dirty Dozen’ and ‘Sholay’ encouraged that police is impotent and lets use criminals against criminals.. then no point.  You will always be confused on that “do you go to the movies when you love life or when life doesn’t love you or doesn’t satisfy you you go to the movies…” Cinema is never a therapy.. its entertainment… It substitutes our desires…

End of the session, let me make you happy by saying that given the choice between trivial materials brilliantly told versus profound material badly told, an audience will always choose the trivial told brilliantly. And Anand has done the latter… May be its too trivial for you, but he has told brilliantly…

‘Kaagaz ke phool’ and ‘Mera naam joker’ were complete success but the audience was a comprehensive failure. And ‘Raanjhana’ may be a whole myth according to you but the audience is a widespread far reaching triumph.

Dhanush is talented. He’s not vaghera vaghera.. (Spell it right.. it’s ‘vagaira’… there’s an ‘I’ in it until your editor or your ghost writer has messed it up for you)… The audience comes out with Dhanush in their hearts and he stays on in them. Heroes take journeys forward, and heroes resolve. And Dhanush has done it. Sad for a lot but true for many, Dhanush is the new heart throb. You may pray for his next down fall and we shall make the next disturbing for you with him..

आप 2002 से तमिल फिल्मों में अभिनय कर रहे हैं. हिंदी फिल्मों में आने में इतनी देर क्यों हुई?
यह मौका मुझे अब मिला है. मेरा मानना है कि हर चीज का एक सही समय होता है. रांझणा जैसी स्क्रिप्ट मेरे पास अब आई और मुझे लगा कि यह रोल मेरे लिए ही लिखा गया है. 

आपके पास अनेक हिंदी फिल्मों के ऑफर आए होंगे, लेकिन आपने रांझणा को ही क्यों चुना?
रांझणा मेरे लिए एकदम परफेक्ट है. यह किरदार आइकॉनिक है. यह बहुत अच्छा किरदार है. मैं कुंदन के किरदार के आसानी से कनेक्ट कर सका. मैं इतना जानता हूं कि यह किरदार मेरे लिए ही लिखा गया है.

दक्षिण भारतीय होते हुए एक बनारसी लडक़े का किरदार निभाना आपके लिए चुनौती रही होगी?
मेरे लिए केवल एक चुनौती थी कि मैं हिंदी नहीं जानता था. यह मेरे लिए एक मुश्किल पक्ष था. लेकिन मुझे इस फिल्म की शूटिंग में बहुत मजा आया, क्योंकि इसके लेखक हिमांशु शर्मा ने हिंदी के मामले में मेरी मदद की. उन्होंने लाइंस को समझने में मेरी सहायता की. वो सब लोग बहुत अच्छे इंसान हैं, इसलिए इसकी शूटिंग को मैंने एंजॉय किया. हम नई जगहों पर गए और नए लोगों से मिले. इस वजह से हिंदी की कठिनाई थोड़ी कम हो गई. मैं कहना चाहूंगा कि मेरे लिए इसमें कोई चैलेंज नहीं था. 

हमने पर्दे पर अनेक प्रेम कहानियां देखी हैं. रांझणा की लव स्टोरी किस प्रकार अलग है?
रांझणा का साधारण प्यार ही इसका असाधारण पहलू है. जब आप इसे देखेंगे तो भूल जाएंगे कि यह एक फिल्म है. यह इतनी रियलिस्टिक है. इस फिल्म के 45 मिनट देखने के बाद मुझे तो ऐसा ही महसूस हुआ. इस फिल्म की विशेषता इसकी सरलता और सहजता है.

आप किस तरह के प्रेमी हैं?
मैं प्यार का इजहार करने में विश्वास करता हूं. मैं बहुत पॉजिटिव हूं. मुझे प्यार किया जाना अच्छा लगता है.

क्या आप बचपन के प्यार में यकीन करते हैं?
मैं हर तरह के प्यार में विश्वास करता हूं. प्यार केवल दूसरे के प्रति एक भावना नहीं है. यह एक अलग तरह का अहसास है. यह जरूरी नहीं है कि आपको अपने पहले प्यार से जुड़ाव होना चाहिए. यह एक अहसास है और इसका सम्मान किया जाना चाहिए.

आपने प्यार में सबसे क्रेजी चीज क्या की है?
मैंने जो भी किया, वह सब क्रेजी था (हंसते हैं). मैं अपने पहले प्यार पर एक फिल्म बना सकता हूं. मुझे नहीं पता कि मुझे अपने किस प्यार का चुनाव करना चाहिए, लेकिन मैं उसके बारे में बात करना चाहूंगा, जिसके साथ मैं हूं. मैं झूठ बोलकर किसी को चोट नहीं पहुंचाना चाहता.

कोलावरी डी की कामयाबी के बाद आपकी लोकप्रियता बहुत बढ़ गई. क्या आपकी पत्नी ऐश्वर्या (रजनीकांत की बड़ी बेटी) असुरक्षित महसूस करती हैं?
उन्हें असुरक्षित क्यों होना चाहिए? बल्कि वह बहुत खुश हैं. असुरक्षित महसूस करने का उनके पास कोई कारण नहीं है.

ऐश्वर्या से आपकी पहली मुलाकात कब हुई? अपनी लव स्टोरी के बारे में बताएं.
वह मेरी फिल्म का फस्र्ट डे फस्र्ट शो देखने थिएटर में गई थीं और मैं पब्लिक का रिएक्शन देखने के लिए वहां मौजूद था. यह मेरी दूसरी फिल्म (कढ़ाल कोंडें) थी. उन्हें फिल्म बहुत अच्छी लगी. बाद में, उन्होंने मुझे एक गुलदस्ते के साथ मैसेज भेजा, ''गुड जॉब एंड कीप इन टचÓÓ. और मैंने उस मैसेज को कुछ ज्यादा ही गंभीरता से ले लिया और आज देखिए हम दोनों कहां हैं (हंसते हैं).

सोनम कपूर के साथ काम करने का अनुभव कैसा रहा? क्या उन्होंने मुंबई को समझने या हिंदी के मामले में आपकी कोई मदद की?
सोनम कपूर के साथ काम करने का अनुभव शानदार रहा. वे मेरे साथ बहुत प्यार और धैर्य से पेश आईं. धैर्य इसलिए कह रहा हूं क्योंकि हिंदी पर मेरी पकड़ अच्छी नहीं थी, लेकिन वे इस बात को लेकर घबराई नहीं. उन्होंने मेरा पूरा सहयोग किया. उन्होंने कभी अपना स्टारडम दिखाने की कोशिश नहीं की. उन्होंने कभी ऐसे बर्ताव नहीं किया कि वे सुपरस्टार हैं. वे डाउन टू अर्थ हैं. वे रोज अपने घर से हम लोगों के लिए खाना लाती थीं. वे स्वीटहार्ट हैं. जहां तक हिंदी की बात है, तो आनंद सर और हिमांशु अधिकतर समय मेरी मदद करते थे. अगर जरूरत होती थी, तो सोनम स्पॉट पर मेरी मदद करती थीं. सोनम ने क्या किया कि मुझे सहज करवाया. वह मेरे लिए बड़ी मदद थी.

आपको साउथ में राजकुमार माना जाता है. आप रजनीकांत के दामाद हैं. रांझणा साइन करते समय किसी प्रकार का प्रेशर था? 
बिल्कुल नहीं. कर्नाटक में लोग मुझे रजनीकांत का दामाद मान कर सम्मान देते हैं, लेकिन जब मैं उत्तर भारत में आता हूं, तो लोग मुझे कोलावरी वाला कहकर बुलाते हैं (हंसते हैं). जब भी मैं बाहर निकलता हूं, तो लोग कहते हैं, वो देखो कोलावरी वाला, कोलावरी वाला. तो रांझणा साइन करते समय मैं कोलावरी वाला था.

क्या आप रजनीकांत से किसी प्रकार का सुझाव लेते हैं?
नहीं, बिल्कुल नहीं. मैं अपने फैसले खुद लेता हूं.

रजनीकांत से किस तरह का रिश्ता आप शेयर करते हैं? एक दोस्त का या फिर ससुर-दामाद का औपचारिक रिश्ता?
हमारा रिश्ता बहुत स्पेशल और अलग है. मैं शब्दों में इसे बयां नहीं कर सकता. यह शब्दों से परे है. यह मेरे लिए बहुत कीमती है. हम दोनों एक-दूसरे के प्रति ईमानदार हैं. यह रिश्ता अपने आप में अनूठा है.

वो घर में कैसे रहते हैं? ऐसा कहा जाता है कि वह अपनी स्क्रीन इमेज को पर्सनल लाइफ में नहीं लाते?
मुझे उनके बारे में बात नहीं करनी चाहिए. यह उचित नहीं होगा. मैं अपने जीवन के बारे में बात कर सकता हूं, लेकिन उनके नहीं.

अमिताभ बच्चन ने कोलावरी डी की प्रशंसा की थी. उनके साथ अपने संबंध के बारे में कुछ बता सकते हैं?
ईमानदारी से कहूं तो मैंने बच्चन साहब को दूर से देखा है. आठ साल पहले मेरी शादी में वो आए थे. उसके बाद उनसे मेरी मुलाकात नहीं हुई. फिर जब कोलावरी डी आया, तो उन्होंने उसके बारे में ट्विट किया. कोलावरी डी की शानदार सफलता के कारणों में से एक वो हैं. उनके एक ट्विट ने इसे चर्चित कर दिया. बाद में, एक अवॉर्ड फंक्शन में मैंने कोलावरी डी को उन्हें समर्पित किया. मैंने इसके बोल बदल दिए और इस धुन पर उनके बारे में गाया. इसके बदले में उन्होंने मुझे अपने गले लगाया, वह अहसास मेरे दिल के हमेशा करीब रहेगा. ऐसा नहीं है कि मैं उनके बहुत नजदीक हूं, उनके लिए मेरे दिल में बहुत सम्मान है. वह मुझे प्रेरित करते हैं. उनके साथ मुझे कुछ ऐसे पल मिले हैं, जिन्हें मैं जिंदगी भर याद करता रहूंगा.

कोलावरी डी ने किस प्रकार आपकी जिंदगी को परिवर्तित किया?
सबकी जिंदगी में एक हाई पॉइंट आता है. कुछ लोगों के जीवन में यह नौकरी हो सकती है, कुछ के लिए कार हो सकती है. मेरे लिए कोलावरी डी मेरे जीवन का हाई पॉइंट था.

जावेद अख्तर ने इसके लिरिक्स की आलोचना की. आपको इस बात से ठेस पहुंची?
बिल्कुल नहीं. मुझे इस इंडस्ट्री में आए काफी साल हो गए. पहले मैं इस तरह की टिप्पणियों से विचलित हो जाता था, लेकिन बाद में मुझे अहसास हुआ कि हर व्यक्ति को अपने विचार रखने का अधिकार है. कुछ लोगों को वह अच्छा लग सकता है और कुछ को बुरा. मुझे इस बात की खुशी है कि मेरा गाना जावेद साहब जैसे लीजेंड तक पहुंचा. हम सबको इस बात की खुशी थी कि यह गाना इस लेवल के लोगों तक पहुंच सका. मैं उनकी इस टिप्पणी को सकारात्मक रूप से लेता हूं. यह उनके विचार हैं और मैं उनके विचारों का सम्मान करता हूं.

आनंद एल राय के साथ कैसा अनुभव रहा?
आनंद जी मेरे सीक्रेट सैंटा हैं. मैं उनके जैसा बनना चाहूंगा. अनेक कारणों में से एक वो हैं, जिनकी वजह से मैं हिंदी फिल्मों में यकीन करता हूं. वह हमेशा दूसरों के हित के बारे में सोचते हैं. वह बहुत सुलझे इंसान हैं. उन्होंने सेट पर मुझे बहुत अच्छे से रखा. मुझे नहीं पता कि रांझणा से मुझे प्रोफेशनल लाइफ में क्या मिलेगा, लेकिन मुझे इसका यकीन है कि मुझे एक बहुत अच्छा इंसान भाई के रूप में मिल चुका है.

क्या यह सच है कि आप आनंद राय के साथ एक हिंदी फिल्म बनाने जा रहे हैं?
हां, हमारी ऐसी योजना है. लेकिन हम अभी उसके बारे में बात कर रहे हैं. हिंदी फिल्मों में मैं आगे क्या करूंगा, यह रांझणा की रिलीज के बाद पता चलेगा.

क्या आप हिंदी फिल्मों में गाने के लिए तैयार हैं?
बिल्कुल, और क्यों नहीं? अगर मुझे मौका मिलता है, तो मैं जरूर हिंदी फिल्म में गाना गाना चाहूंगा.

हिंदी और तमिल फिल्म इंडस्ट्री में आपने क्या फर्क महसूस किया?
कोई फर्क नहीं है. केवल भाषा अलग है. कल्चर के मामले में भी थोड़ा विभिन्नता है. भावनाएं एक ही हैं. फिल्मों के लिए लोगों को प्यार भी एक समान ही है. मुझे कोई बड़ा अंतर नहीं दिखा.

क्या दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्मों के हिंदी रिमेक के आप पक्षधर हैं?
आजकल हिंदी फिल्मों का रिमेक तमिल में हो रहा है, तो तमिल फिल्मों का हिंदी में रिमेक होना चाहिए. तमिल फिल्मों का तेलुगू और कन्नड़ में रिमेक होता है. ऐसा हर इंडस्ट्री में हो रहा है. इसमें गलत बात नहीं है. यह एक अच्छी चीज है.

अपनी कौन-सी फिल्म का आप चाहेंगे कि हिंदी में रिमेक हो?
मैं चाहता था कि पोल्लाधवन (२००७) हिंदी में बने. लेकिन मैंने सुना है कि किसी ने उसके अधिकार खरीद लिए हैं और इसे हिंदी में बना रहा है.

क्या आपको इस बात का डर है कि आपको हिंदी फिल्म दर्शकों के बीच स्वीकृति मिलेगी या नहीं?
नहीं, मेरे अंदर ऐसी कोई फीलिंग नहीं है. मैं नर्वस भी नहीं हूं. बल्कि मैं तो खुश हूं कि मैं रांझणा जैसी फिल्म कर सका. और मैं ऐसे लोगों के बीच हूं, जो वाकई अच्छे इंसान हैं. मैंने जितनी चाह की थी, उससे कहीं ज्यादा ईश्वर ने मुझे दिया है. इसलिए जिंदगी से मेरी कोई अपेक्षा नहीं है. इसलिए मुझे कभी निराशा नहीं होती और मैं सरप्राइजेज के लिए हमेशा तैयार रहता हूं.

कोलावरी डी के बाद कोई क्रेजी फैन मोमेंट, जो आप शेयर कर सकें.
मुझे लगता है कि कोलावरी डी अपने आप में सबसे क्रेजी चीज थी. मेरे हिसाब से कोलावरी डी का हर वर्जन, सोनू निगम के बेटे के वर्जन के अलावा, जो इंटरनेट पर आया, मेरे लिए क्रेजी था.

हमने आपको रांझणा के सेट पर देखा. आपमें कोई स्टार वाला एट्टियूड नहीं है. क्या आप ऐसे ही हैं?
आपने मुझे वैसे ही देखा, जैसा मैं हूं. मुझे ऑफ कैमरा एक्टिंग करनी नहीं आती (हंसते हैं). यह हमेशा से मेरी समस्या रही है.

आप एक्टिंग में कैसे आए?
मैंने एक्टिंग में आने का फैसला नहीं किया था. मैं हमेशा एक इंजीनियर बनना चाहता था, लेकिन इस करियर ने मुझे चूज किया. मेरे पिता (कस्तूरी राजा) एक निर्माता-निर्देशक हैं. मुझे याद है कि एक इमर्जेन्सी आ गई थी और उन्हें एक सप्ताह में अपनी फिल्म की शूटिंग शुरू करनी थी और उस रोल के लिए उन्हें एक स्कूल बॉय की जरूरत थी और उस समय मैं स्कूल में था. बस, मैं आ गया फिल्मों में.

ऐसा कहा जाता है कि शादी के बाद स्टार्स की फैन फॉलोइंग कम हो जाती है. क्या आप मानते हैं?
मेरे साथ ऐसा कुछ नहीं हुआ है.

क्या आप मानते हैं कि एक स्टार को कम उम्र में शादी नहीं करनी चाहिए?
बिल्कुल नहीं. लोगों को उस समय शादी कर लेनी चाहिए, जब उन्हें लगे कि यह सही समय है.

आप दो बच्चों (यात्रा और लिंगा) के पिता हैं, जिस बात पर आपको देखने के बाद कोई यकीन नहीं करेगा. क्या आप सख्त पिता हैं?
मैं किसी भी दूसरे पिता की तरह हूं. एक पिता के तौर पर मेरे अंदर कोई स्पेशल बात नहीं है. मैं अपने बच्चों के लिए एक नॉर्मल डैड हूं. हर पिता अपने बच्चों के लिए बेस्ट करना चाहता है और मैं भी ऐसा ही करता हूं. हर पिता चाहता है कि उसके बच्चे हर चीज में सबसे आगे हों, ऐसा ही मैं भी चाहता हूं.

आपके बच्चे एक सेलीब्रिटी परिवार में बड़े हो रहे हैं, आप उन्हें ग्राउंडेड कैसे रखते हैं?
मुझे इस तरह का कोई प्रयास नहीं करना पड़ा है क्योंकि मेरा बड़ा बेटा छह साल का है और छोटा तीन साल का है. हां, मैं उन्हें मीडिया से दूर रखने की हर संभव कोशिश करता हूं. मैं उन्हें एक सामान्य बचपन देने की कोशिश करता हूं.

हिंदी फिल्म इंडस्ट्री में किन निर्देशकों के साथ आप काम करना चाहते हैं?
मैं राजकुमार हिरानी, अनुराग बासु, अनुराग कश्यप और अभिषेक कपूर के साथ  काम करना पसंद करूंगा.

आप इनके बारे में कैसे जानते हैं? क्या आपने इनकी फिल्में देखी हैं?
नहीं, ऐसा नहीं है. मेरे पास फिल्में देखने के लिए समय नहीं मिल पाता, लेकिन ये निर्देशक हैं, जिनका नाम मेरे दिमाग में घूमता रहता है, इसलिए मैंने इनका नाम लिया.

आप किन एक्ट्रेसेस के साथ रोमांस करना चाहते हैं?
यह मेरे निर्देशकों पर निर्भर करेगा (हंसते हैं).

Raghuvendra Singh grabs the one-in-a-million opportunity to meet superstar Dhanush

If you thought what the Prince of South was doing in Raanjhanaa, a film based in Uttar Pradesh, you’re wasting time. With Dhanush there are no accidents. Kolaveri di was the internet phenomenon that laid foundations for success stories like Gangnam style and Harlem shake. Even back then people asked who this short and frail-looking guy was. And why he was so popular? The man’s Rajnikanth’s son in law. In some circles that’s the equivalent of being Superman. But that’s not even his feat. Dhanush is that man who commands a tsunami of fans in Chennai. People hang perilously off stadium railings to catch a glimpse of the guy. A photo with Dhanush is worth more than Jayalalitha’s entire closet. He’s the great leveller. He’s the hero we all can be. If you go by his disposition and humility you’d think he was your introvert classmate from college. Instead, the reality is that he’s a National Award winning actor. He’s conquered the Filmfare Awards too. But most importantly he’s one of India’s biggest international icons.

And yet, in Raanjhanaa he’s playing a school boy hopelessly in love. And just like that he turns into a charming young man. If its surprises you’re looking for, Dhanush is your man. He’ll shock you, pleasantly of course, on every level – professional, personal and emotional. He’s eager to kick start an innings in Hindi cinema. And if his track record down South or in cyber space is any indication, Mumbai movie buffs better clear some space on their poster walls. Here’s a superstar like never before...      

You’ve been acting since 2002, why did it take you so much time to debut in Hindi films?

The opportunity came now. Everything happens to you at a specific time and this happened to me now. I came across a script like Raanjhanaa only now and I felt that this role was tailor-made for me, so it’s happening now.

You must’ve got many offers after the success of Kolaveri di. What made you sign Raanjhanaa?

Raanjhanaa is the ideal film for me. The character is iconic which is good. I can connect with the character of Kundan. All I know is that it is made for me.

Was it challenging playing a Banarasi guy given that you hail from Chennai?

The only challenge was that I don’t know Hindi so getting a hang of the language was a little tough. But I had a great time because the writer Himanshu Sharma helped me with the dialogue; my lines and all. And they’re all beautiful human beings so we had a lot of fun shooting because we were exploring new places, new people. Thanks to these experiences the tough parts felt a lot easier. I wouldn’t say making Raanjhanaa was a challenge.

What makes Raanjhanaa different from all the other love stories?

Ordinary love is the extraordinary part of Raanjhanaa. You’ll forget you’re watching a film. You’ll feel you’re watching life. That’s what I felt on seeing 45 minutes of the movie. The speciality of the film will be its simplicity.

What kind of a lover are you?

A very expressive one. (Laughs) I’m not obsessive types; I like to maintain a positive attitude in any relationship which I believe is a healthy thing to do. I’m also the kind of lover who loves to be loved.

Do you believe in childhood love?

I believe in all sorts of love (Laughs). Love is not just one’s emotions directed towards another person. Love is a different and complex emotion all together. It’s not necessary that you have to always relate to your first love. Love is common and it can happen to anybody at any given point of time. It’s a feeling and it should be respected just the way it is. I follow all sorts of love.

What is the craziest thing you’ve done for your lady love?

Everything I did was crazy. (Laughs).  I can make a film out of my first love.

Can you elaborate a little?

I can’t just pick one instance. I’d certainly love to talk about the woman of my life. I don’t want to offend anyone by lying.

Your fan following has increased many fold after the success of Kolaveri di. Does that make your wife, Aishwarya insecure at times?

Why would she be insecure? She is very happy. There is no reason for her to feel insecure about anything.

When did you fall in love with Aishwarya? And how did your love story kick start?

She happened to watch the first day first show of my film in the theatre and I was there to gauge the crowd response. It was my second film’s screening. She liked the film and after the screening she sent me a bouquet with a message, “Good job and keep in touch”. I think I just took that message way too seriously. (Laughs)

How was it working with Sonam Kapoor?

Sonam Kapoor is a darling to work with. She was lovely and very patient. Patient because I wasn’t well-versed with the language but she was calm about it and was also very cooperative. She never behaved like she’s a big superstar. She was down to earth. She was a helpful co-star. She brought food to the sets everyday and she’d also send me food without me asking for it.

How did Sonam help you? Did she guide you on the language?

As far as the language is concerned, Aanand Sir and Himanshu were there to help me most of the time. Sonam also helped me quite a bit on the spot if I needed help. What Sonam did the most was make me feel comfortable.

You’re known as the Prince of South. And you’re the son-in-law of the legendary Rajnikanth. Was there any sort of pressure while signing Raanjhanaa?

No, not exactly. Even in states like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, they refer to me as Rajnikanth’s son in law. But when I come to the North, they call me Kolaveriwala. (Laughs). So wherever I go people point at me saying, “See see, Kolaveri wala... Kolaveri wala!” When I signed Raanjhanaa, I was the kolaveriwala.

Did you take any sort of advice from Rajni sir?

No, not at all. I take my own decisions.

What sort of a rapport do you share with Rajnikanth? Are ya‘ll good friends or like normal father and son in law?

We share a different and special bond. I’m telling you the truth. I cannot explain it, it’s something beyond words. It is very precious to me. We’re very honest to each other and that’s how it works most of the time.

Amitabh Bachchan was all praise for Kolaveri di. What sort of a bond do you share with him?

To be honest, I’ve only seen Bachchan saab from a distance. He’d attended my marriage 8 years back and I haven’t met him since. And then Kolaveri di happened, he also tweeted about the song, which helped it get recognition. He was one of the main reasons why Kolaveri di was such a tremendous success. Then I went on to doing a small jig of Kolaveri di at an awards function for him. I changed the lyrics and sang the song about him. For that, he gave me a hug which will always be close to my heart. It’s not that I’m really close to him or something, I have immense respect for him, great admiration and I look up to him. He is one of the greatest actors in our country. I don’t know him on a personal level, I’ve had acquaintances with him and I will cherish all those moments for a lifetime.

In what way has Kolaveri di changed your life?

In everyone’s life, there comes a high point. For some people, it may be a job opportunity, or even a purchase of a car for that matter. For me, that high point in my life is Kolaveri di. Let’s just say my life has changed.

Did it hurt you when Javed Akhtar criticised the lyrics of Kolaveri di?

Not at all. I’ve been in the industry long enough. Initially I used to get offended but then later I realised that every human being has the right to express his/her own opinions. Some people may like something whereas some might not. I’m glad that the song reached a legend like Javed saab. We’re all happy that it at least got there in the first place. I’ll go ahead and take his comment positively. It’s his opinion and I totally respect it.

How was it working with director Aanand L Rai?

Aanandji is my Secret Santa. I dream to be like Aanandji.  He is one of the few reasons why I believe in Hindi films. He always thinks well about others.  He is a very intense person. He treated me so nicely on the sets. I do not know what Raanjhanaa will get me after its release but working on it has given me a brother who’s a pure human being.

So does this association go beyond Raanjhanaa? We hear that you both are planning to produce a movie together?

We’re planning to. We’re still discussing about it. It’s in the initial stages as of now. Nothing much can be said about it right now.

Will you now sing in Hindi movies too?

Of course, why not? I would love to.

General opinions suggest that the South industry is more professional than its North counterpart. What was your experience like?

I don’t see any difference at all. It’s all the same. Only, the language is different. There is a slight difference in the culture. But that’s it. The emotions are the same; the love for movies is also pretty much the same. Cinema is cinema and a script is a script and acting is acting. I didn’t find any prominent differences.  

Do you think its okay to remake South movies into Hindi?

Why not? There are times when Hindi movies are remade into Tamil, so there’s nothing wrong if the reverse happens. Subsequently, Tamil movies are being remade into Telugu and Kannada films. This trend is happening everywhere. It’s not that just Tamil films being made in Hindi. I feel it’s a good thing. It’s a safe bet.

Which of your films would you want to be remade in Hindi?

The movie that I’d have wanted to bring to Hindi cinema is already being made. There’s a film called Polladhavan (2007), which I would have definitely wanted to be made in Hindi. I would have loved to remake it but I hear that someone has already bought the rights to do so.

Do ever feel insecure of being in Hindi cinema? Are you concerned if the audience here will accept you?

No, I don’t have any such feelings. I am not nervous at all. In fact, I am very happy that I’m doing Raanjhanaa. And I’m working with some very good people who have been really kind to me. God has given me a lot more than I ever wished for. I don’t have any expectations from life, so I am never disappointed. I’m always open to surprises.

Can you share any memory of a crazy fan moment after Kolaveri di?

I think Kolaveri di itself is a crazy song. I feel every version of Kolaveri di except for the one by Sonu Niigaam’s son was totally crazy.

On the sets of Raanjhanaa you didn’t have an iota of starry attitude. You were like any other man. Are you like that in reality as well?

You have seen me just the way I am. I do not know how to act off the camera (Laughs). That has always been my biggest problem.

How did you get into acting?

I did not choose to get into acting. I always wanted to be a Marine Engineer, but then this career chose me.

How did it happen?

My father Kasthuri Raja was a director / producer. I remember that once there was an emergency and he had to start his movie within a week. He needed a school boy to play the role and I was in school at the time. It just happened back then.

It is said that marriage reduces a star’s fan following. Would you agree?

That’s something that hasn’t happened to me.

So is it okay if a star ties the knot at a young age or even before his/her career’s been launched?

Yes. People should get married whenever they feel is the right time to do so. I firmly believe in that.

What kind of a father are you?

I’m like any other father. There is nothing special about me; I am a normal father to my kids Yatra and Linga. Every father would want the best for their kids and so do I. Every father wants their child to be good at everything and even I wish the same for my kids.

They’re growing up in a celebrity family. How do you keep them grounded?

I haven’t taken any special effort to do that. The older one Yatra is 6 and the younger one Linga is 3. They don’t give me any trouble as yet. Even at their age they’re pretty sorted.

You’ve kept them away from the media?

I try to. As much as possible. Like any concerned father would.

What kind of work are you looking forward to in Mumbai?

The success of Raanjhanaa will be a telling factor in that area. Everything depends on this movie from here on. We’re all hoping for the best. We all have high hopes. I’ll come to know if people have liked me or not after they’ve seen the film. Until then there’s no way to know the way forward.

Which directors are you looking forward to work with?

I would love to work with Rajkumar Hirani, Anurag Basu, Anurag Kashyap and Abhishek Kapoor.

So you’ve kept a keen eye on Hindi movies off late?

No, not exactly. I’ve not really got the time to do that but these are the directors whose names are always on top of my mind. They’re the ones I’d love to work with.

Who are the actresses you’d love to romance on screen?

It depends on the director. (Laughs)

You have any friends in the Hindi film industry?

As of now, Aanand Sir, Himanshu, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Mohammed Zeeshan and Hemal Kothari are my friends.

एक्टिंग से मुझे सख्त नफरत थी. मेरी नजर में एक्टर्स के लिए कोई इज्जत नहीं थी. मुझे एक्टर्स सबसे बेकार लगते थे. मुझे समझ में नहीं आता था कि लोग क्यों इनके पीछे भागते हैं? ये इतने लोकप्रिय क्यों होते हैं? मैं अपनी दीदी (प्रियंका चोपड़ा) से यही कहती थी. वो मुझे हमेशा डांटतीं और कहती थीं कि तुम्हे एक्टिंग के बारे में कुछ नहीं पता, इसलिए बेहतर है कि तुम अपनी राय मत दो. अगर किसी दिन तुम एक्टर बन गई तो तुम्हे हमारी मेहनत समझ में आएगी. मैं उनसे हंसकर कहती कि मैं कौन सी एक्टर बनने वाली हूं!

लेकिन मुझे नहीं पता था कि किस्मत मुझे इसी प्रोफेशन में लेकर आएगी. मैं बचपन से बैंकर बनना चाहती थी. मेरी पैदाइश अंबाला में एक बिजनेस घराने में हुई. मेरे पापा आर्मी के साथ बिजनेस करते हैं. हमारे घर में सिनेमा देखने का कल्चर नहीं था. मैंने बचपन में कुल मिलाकर पन्द्रह फिल्में देखी होंगी. मेरे दो छोटे भाई हैं सहज और शिवांग. हम लोग बहुत पढ़ाकू थे. अनुशासित जीवन जीते थे. मैंने फिल्में देखनी तब शुरू की, जब मैं पढ़ाई के लिए मैनचेस्टर गई. उस वक्त मुझे पता भी नहीं था कि फिल्में कैसे बनती हैं? प्रोडक्शन हाउस कैसे होते हैं? लेकिन हां, मुझे इतना तो पता ही था कि यश चोपड़ा कौन हैं? आज मेरा नसीब देखिए कि मैं उन्हीं की कंपनी में एक्ट्रेस हूं.
अरे हां, मैं आप लोगों को यह बता रही थी कि मैं बैंकर बनना चाहती थी. तो बैंकर की पढ़ाई के लिए मैं इंगलैंड गई. वहां पर मैंने इकॉनॉमिक्स, फाइनेंस और बिजनेस में ट्रिपल ऑनर्स किया. उसके बाद मैं नौकरी के लिए लंदन शिफ्ट हो गई. बचपन के कुछ सपनों में से मेरा एक सपना यह भी था कि मैं लंदन या अमेरिका में नौकरी करूंगी. लेकिन जरूरी नहीं है कि हमारे सभी सपने पूरे हों. 2009 में मैं लंदन गई और उसी साल वहां रिसेशन आ गया. मुझे नौकरी नहीं मिली. हालांकि मैं ब्रिलिएंट स्टूडेंट थी. मैंने सोचा कि चलो, छह महीने के लिए इंडिया जाती हूं. इंटर्नशिप करूंगी और फिर लंदन लौट आऊंगी. मैं 2009 में मुंबई आ गई और अपनी बहन प्रियंका के साथ रहने लगी.
लोग सोचते हैं कि मैं और प्रियंका दूर के रिश्तेदार हैं. मैं उनके साथ अपना नाम जोड़ रही हूं, लेकिन यह सच नहीं है. मेरे और प्रियंका के पापा सगे भाई हैं. मैं बहुत लकी हूं कि वो मेरी बहन हैं. और मैं इस बात का अब पूरा फायदा भी उठाती हूं. अगर मुझे किसी प्रकार की दिक्कत या संशय होता है, तो मैं फौरन उन्हें फोन करती हूं. मैं तो उनकी अलमारी में से कपड़े भी निकालकर पहन लेती हूं. उसको मेरी लाइफ के बारे में सब पता है और मुझे उसकी लाइफ के बारे में सब कुछ पता है. कोई बॉयफ्रेंड प्रॉब्लम हो, तो सबसे पहले उसे ही पता चलता है. हालांकि मेरा कोई वैसा बॉयफ्रेंड नहीं है(हा-हा-हा).
सच कहूं तो आज तक किसी लडक़े की हिम्मत नहीं हुई कि वो मुझे प्रपोज करे. लडक़े मुझसे डरते हैं कि मैं चमाट-वमाट न मार दूं. कोई मुझे अप्रोच ही नहीं करता. और हां, मैं गालियां-वालियां भी बहुत देती हूं. कमीना, हरामी, एमसी, बीसी तो हम बड़े आराम से बोल देते हैं. आप सुनकर हंसेंगे कि ये गालियां पापा ने मुझे सिखाई हैं. मेरे पापा गाली में ही बात करते हैं. लेकिन हम पंजाबी लोग गाली देने के लिए नहीं देते. हम लोग प्यार से पूछते हैं कि अरे यार कमीने, कहां था तू? शायद इसीलिए मेरा कोई बॉयफ्रेंड भी नहीं है. ओह, मैं भी कहां से कहां बात लेकर चली गई. मैं यह बता रही थी कि जब मैं मुंबई आई तो उन्हीं के पास रहती थी. उनके अलावा मुंबई में मेरा कोई दूसरा था भी तो नहीं.
प्यार इंपॉसिबल की शूटिंग के लिए दीदी एक दिन यशराज स्टूडियो गईं. मैंने उनके साथ ऐसे ही हो लिया. मैंने जब यशराज स्टूडियो देखा, तो दीदी से कहा कि यार, ये तो बड़ा कमाल का स्टूडियो है. इनका फाइनेंस या एकाउंट जैसा कोई डिपार्टमेंट है कि नहीं? दीदी ने कहा कि ऑफ कोर्स है. मैंने कहा कि मुझे यहां इंटर्नशिप करना है. मैं यशराज में रफीक से मिली, जो यशराज के मार्केटिंग हेड हैं. उन्होंने मुझे इंटर्नशिप पर रख लिया. एक महीने बाद मुझे यशराज के ऑफिस से प्यार हो गया. फिर मैंने जॉब के लिए अप्लाय कर दिया. रफीक ने कहा कि क्योंकि तुम प्रियंका की बहन हो, इसलिए मैं तुम्हे जॉब नहीं देना चाहता. मैंने छह महीने ऐसे ही काम किया. फिर एक दिन मैंने उनसे कहा कि भैया, मुझे अपना घर भी चलाना है, कितने दिन इंटर्नशिप करूंगी? तब उन्होंने मुझे जॉब पर रख लिया.
मैं मार्केटिंग डिपार्टमेंट में थी. यहां मेरा एक्टर्स से मिलना-जुलना होने लगा. मैंने दिल बोले हडि़प्पा, रॉकेट सिंह-सेल्समैन ऑफ द ईयर, प्यार इंपॉसिबल, बदमाश कंपनी, लफंगे परिन्दे, बैंड बाजा बारात फिल्मों पर काम किया. अगर आप फिल्म के अंत में देखेंगे, तो मेरा नाम आता है. एक्टर्स से लगातार मिलने-जुलने के बाद मुझे लगने लगा कि यार, ये काम तो मैं भी कर सकती हूं. मैंने नौकरी छोडऩे का मन बना लिया. उन्हीं दिनों बैंड बाजा बारात का प्रमोशन शुरू हो गया था. मनीष शर्मा (बैंड बाजा बारात के डायरेक्टर) मेरा दोस्त बन गया था. एक दिन शाम को मैंने मनीष से कहा कि तू जानता है, मैं सोच रही हूं कि थोड़ी एक्टिंग-वैक्टिंग करूं. वो जो-जोर से हंसने लगा. मुझे कुछ समझ में नहीं आया. फिर उसने कहा कि तू एक काम कर, तू शानू से मिल आ. शानू शर्मा यशराज की फिल्मों की कास्टिंग डायरेक्टर हैं.
मैं शानू के घर गई. उसने मुझसे ऐसे ही कुछ करवाना शुरू किया. मैंने सोचा कि चलो, इसी बहाने मेरी यशराज की कास्टिंग डायरेक्टर के साथ अच्छी-भली प्रैक्टिस चल रही है. ये तो एक्टिंग स्कूल से भी बढिय़ां हैं. उसने मुझे कैमरे पर शूट कर लिया. मैं उस बात को भूल गई. मैं रोज ऑफिस आ रही हूं. कुछ दिन बाद मैंने नौकरी से इस्तीफा दे दिया. यहीं बात खत्म हो गई. फिर अचानक एक दिन मनीष का फोन आया कि तुम क्या कर रही हो? तू ऑफिस आ जा. मैं आ गई ऑफिस. उसने कहा कि बधाई हो, तुम यशराज के साथ तीन फिल्मों का कांट्रैक्ट साइन कर रही हो. मैंने कहा कि क्या? मैं हैरान थी. मुझे कुछ समझ में नहीं आ रहा था. उसने कहा कि उस दिन तू शानू के इर्द-गिर्द जो कर रही थी, वो तेरा ऑडिशन था. मनीष ने बताया कि मैं छह महीने से आदि (आदित्य चोपड़ा) को बोल रहा हूं कि आपके मार्केटिंग डिपार्टमेंट में एक लडक़ी काम करती है परिनीती. उसे जॉब छुड़वाओ, वो एक्ट्रेस है. वो लेडीज वर्सेस रिकी बहल की डिंपल चड्ढा बन सकती है.
अब मुश्किल यह थी कि मैं पापा को इस बारे में कैसे बताऊं. मैं अंबाला गई. मैंने पापा से कहा कि मैं एक्टिंग करने के बारे में सोच रही हूं. उन्होंने आश्चर्य से पूछा कि ये एक्टिंग कहां से बीच में आ गई? तुम वापस लंदन जाने वाली हो न? मैंने कहा, एक्चुअली पापा, मेरे पास यशराज की तीन फिल्मों का ऑफर आया है और पहली फिल्म लेडीज वर्सेस रिकी बहल है. यशराज का नाम सुनकर उन्हें बहुत खुशी हुई. मम्मी तो खुशी के मारे रोने लगीं. मुझे वो पल याद आ गया, जब दीदी मिस वल्र्ड बनी थीं. हम दस-पन्द्रह लोग रात को जागकर टीवी पर प्रोग्राम देख रहे थे. जब घोषणा हुई कि वो मिस वल्र्ड बन गई हैं, तो हम लोग पागल हो गए थे.
मैं खास तौर पर एक बात का आप लोगों से शेयर करना चाहती हूं कि मैं कितनी भी बड़ी एक्ट्रेस क्यों न बन जाऊं (जो शायद मैं एक दिन बनूंगी), लेकिन मैं कभी ट्रेन्ट्रम नहीं करूंगी. नकली नहीं बनूंगी. मैं कभी स्पॉइल्ड एक्ट्रेस नहीं बनूंगी. उसकी वजह यह है कि मेरी शुरूआत हबीब फैजल जैसे निर्देशक के साथ हुई है, जिन्होंने इशकजादे फिल्म के दौरान मुझे ट्रेन किया. मैं उन्हें प्यार से हिटलर बुलाती हूं, लेकिन वाकई मैं नसीब की बहुत धनी हूं. वे परफेक्शनिस्ट हैं. अगर वो नहीं होते, तो मैं इशकजादे की जोया नहीं बन सकती थी. मैं हट्टी-कट्टी थी. उन्होंने मुझे पतला बनाया.
आपसे यह बताना तो मैं भूल ही रही थी कि मैं एक ट्रेन्ड सिंगर हूं. मुझे बचपन से गाने का शौक है. 2003 में मैंने हिंदुस्तानी क्लासिकल सीखना शुरू किया. मैंने इसमें ग्रेजुएशन किया है. कभी-कभी मैं सोचती हूं कि अगर एक्टिंग में मेरा कुछ नहीं हुआ, तो मैं सिंगर बन जाऊंगी. सिर्फ गाने के लिए ही मैं स्कूल में इंगिलश म्यूजिकल्स प्लेज करती थी. उसमें मुझे एक्टिंग के साथ गाने का मौका मिल जाता था.
आपको एक बात सच-सच बताती हूं. अब मैं जितना सम्मान एक्टिंग के प्रोफेशन का करती हूं, उतना किसी दूसरे प्रोफेशन का नहीं. अब मुझे समझ में आ गया है कि एक्टर्स क्यों इतने लोकप्रिय होते हैं और वे क्यों इतना पैसा कमाते हैं? दो सौ लोगों की यूनिट के बीच कैमरे के सामने रोना या हंसना बहुत मुश्किल काम है. सिर्फ मेकअप लगाकर कैमरे के सामने खड़ा होना एक्टिंग नहीं होती. यह आसान काम नहीं है. जैसे इशकजादे की शूटिंग हमने कडक़ती ठंड में की. इतनी ठंड थी कि आप पानी रख दो, तो वह जम जाए. एक शॉट में मुझे जीप चलानी थी, मेरे सामने अस्सी किलो का कैमरा रखा था. सडक़ पर सामने से गाय-भैंस भी आ रही हैं. फिर मुझे जीप से कूदना है, गोली भी चलानी है. बाप रे बाप, इतना सारा काम और एक्रागता के साथ करना है. लेकिन मैं इन चीजों को एंजॉय कर रही हूं. अब मैं सोचती हूं कि मैं बैंकर बनना ही क्यों चाहती थी? मुझे तो एक्टर बनना चाहिए था. जब लोग मुझसे कहते थे कि तुम प्रियंका की बहन हो, तुम्हे एक्टर बन जाना चाहिए, तो मुझे उनकी बात सुन लेनी चाहिए थी.

ऑन द सेट्स: रांझणा

सोनम कपूर और धनुष के साथ आनंद एल राय फिल्म रांझणा के कुछ गंभीर दृश्यों की शूटिंग फिल्मसिटी में कर रहे थे. उनके सेट से कुछ खूबसूरत यादें लेकर लौटे हैं रघुवेन्द्र सिंह

कहानी
कुंदन (धनुष) और जोया (सोनम कपूर) की प्रेम कहानी है रांझणा. यह बनारस की गलियों में रची-बसी है. कुंदन का बचपन का प्यार है जोया, लेकिन वह उससे अपने प्यार का इजहार करने की हिम्मत नहीं जुटा पाया. जोया पढ़ाई के लिए दिल्ली चली जाती है. जेएनयू में उसकी मुलाकात अकरम (अभय देओल) से होती है और फिर वह राजनीति में उतर जाती है. इस त्रिकोणीय प्रेम कहानी में दोस्ती और राजनीति का हल्का रंग भी है. 

फिल्मसिटी में बसी दिल्ली
रांझणा यूं तो बनारस के शुद्ध वातावरण में बसी एक प्रेम कहानी है, लेकिन इस प्रेम कहानी का एक बहुत गंभीर पहलू भी है. जिसके तार दिल्ली की राजनीति से जुड़ते हैं. इस राजनीति में उतरकर जोया कुछ खोती है, तो कुछ पाती है. उसने क्या खोया है और क्या पाया है, यह तो आपको यह फिल्म देखने के बाद पता चलेगा, लेकिन मुंबई की फिल्मसिटी में आनंद एल राय कुछ ऐसे दृश्यों की शूटिंग कर रहे हैं, जिनमें सोनम कपूर और धनुष को अभिनय के अपने हुनर का प्रदर्शन करने का अवसर मिला है.
आम तौर पर सोनम कपूर पर्दे पर डिजाइनर लिबास में नजर आती हैं, लेकिन इसमें उन्होंने सादगी का चोला पहन रखा है. काले जूतों, ब्लू जींस और काली कमीज के ऊपर उन्होंने गले में एक शॉल लपेट रखा है. चेहरे पर गंभीरता है. वह अस्पताल से जैसे ही बाहर निकलती हैं, मीडिया उन पर टूट पड़ता है. लेकिन वह किसी सवाल का जवाब दिए बिना मीडिया को चीर कर निकल जाती हैं. महज दो टेक में आनंद एल राय इस सीन को ओके कर देते हैं. निर्माता-निर्देशक सुभाष घई के व्हिस्लिंगवुड्स इंटरनेशनल स्कूल के एक हिस्से को दिल्ली के अस्पताल में तब्दील कर दिया गया है. कट होते ही आनंद राय हमसे सोनम कपूर की परफॉर्मेन्स के बारे में पूछते हैं और फिर अपने इस कलाकार की तारीफ में कहते हैं, ''सोनम कमाल की एक्ट्रेस हैं. वह जिस संजीदगी और समर्पण से काम करती हैं, वह प्रशंसनीय है. आनंद जानकारी देते हैं कि फिल्म की शूटिंग लगभग पूरी हो चुकी है और यहां वे फिल्म का प्री-क्लाइमेक्स सीन शूट कर रहे हैं. 

मैं फिर बनारस लौटना चाहूंगा

हम मॉनीटर के एक ओर बैठकर बातें करने में व्यस्त हैं, तो दूसरी ओर धनुष तल्लीनता से एक अंग्रेजी नॉवेल पढ़ रहे हैं. सेट के शोर-शराबे का उन पर कोई असर नहीं है. हम उनका ध्यान तोड़ते हैं. धनुष पहली बार साउथ का अपना साम्राज्य छोडक़र मुंबई आए हैं. रांझणा उनकी पहली हिंदी फिल्म है. बनारस में उन्होंने इस फिल्म की शूटिंग के दौरान एक महीने से ज्यादा वक्त बिताया. ''मुझे बनारस बहुत अच्छा लगा. अगर मौका मिले, तो मैं फिर उस शहर में लौटना चाहूंगा. उत्तर भारत के अपने प्रवास का अनुभव इन शब्दों में वे बयां करते हैं. अगला शॉट रेडी होते ही धनुष को बुलाया जाता है. इस शॉट में धनुष गलियारे में कुर्सी पर बैठे हैं और अकरम के परिजन आकर उनका शुक्रिया अदा करते हैं. शॉट खत्म हो जाता है, लेकिन धनुष के आस-पास न मेकअप आर्टिस्ट और न ही हेयर स्टाइलिस्ट नजर आता है. फिल्मकार आनंद बताते हैं, ''धनुष को मेकअप-हेयर आर्टिस्ट की जरूरत ही नहीं पड़ती. वे अपने आप सब कर लेते हैं.

लंच ब्रेक की घोषणा होती है. सोनम अपनी वैनिटी वैन में चली जाती हैं. आनंद हमें धनुष की वैनिटी वैन में लेकर पहुंचते हैं. धनुष की मांग पर आनंद घर से अपनी पत्नी के हाथ की बनी भिंडी की सब्जी लाए हैं. धनुष भिंडी की सब्जी की तारीफ करते नहीं थकते. ''मैंने भिंडी की ऐसी सब्जी कभी नहीं खाई थी. मैं भाभी जी (आनंद राय की पत्नी) का फैन बन गया हूं. जब हम उनकी टिफिन से भिंडी की सब्जी निकालते हैं, तो वे यह कहकर हमें फौरन रोक देते हैं. ''मुझे रात को भी सब्जी खानी है. धनुष बताते हैं कि बिना कोक के वह कभी खाना नहीं खाते थे, लेकिन मुंबई आने के बाद उनकी यह आदत छूट गई है और वह इस बात से बहुत खुश हैं.

सोनम ने जीत लिया दिल

अगला सीन एक प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस का फिल्माया जा रहा है. चीफ मिनिस्टर और कुछ अन्य नेताओं के साथ जोया डायस पर है. चीफ मिनिस्टर प्रेस को संबोधित करती हैं, ''एआईसीपी और हमारी पार्टी प्री-इलेक्शन इलेक्ट्रोरियल अलायंस में जा रहे हैं. वक्त आ गया है कि नया खून राजनीति में आए. राइट्स चाहिए तो ड्यूटी भी निभाओ. आओ जोया... और जोया उठकर डायस की ओर बढ़ती है. आनंद कट बोलते हैं. यह बेहद इमोशनल सीन है. सोनम को नम आंखों से एक लंबा डायलॉग बोलना है, लेकिन वह गिलसरीन नहीं लगातीं. वह डायस पर खड़ी होती हैं और डायलॉग बोलते-बोलते उनकी आंखों से आंसू छलक पड़ते हैं. चार रिटेक्स में आनंद सीन ओके कर देते हैं. सोनम तेज कदमों से आती हैं और आनंद के गले लग जाती हैं. सभी मॉनीटर पर शॉट चेक करते हैं. आनंद राय हमारा परिचय मशहूर थिएटरकर्मी अरविंद गौड़ से करवाते हैं और कहते हैं, ''अगर हमारी फिल्म में दोस्ती, कॉलेज और राजनीति असली दिखेगी, तो उसका श्रेय इन्हें जाएगा. अरविंद गौड़ पहली बार कैमरे के लिए एक्टिंग करके बेहद रोमांचित हैं.

मैं इस दुनिया से बिलॉन्ग नहीं करती

सोनम कपूर के लिए यह फिल्म एक चुनौती रही. इसकी शूटिंग आरंभ करने से पहले उन्होंने अरविंद गौड़ के साथ काफी दिनों तक वर्कशॉप की थी. उनके लगन की तारीफ करते हुए अरविंद ने कहा, ''सोनम ने जोया के किरदार के लिए बहुत मेहनत की. मुझे उनका सर्मपण देखकर बहुत खुशी हुई. सोनम फिल्म के सेट पर मस्त मिजाज नजर आईं. वह कभी पपी के साथ खेलती, उसके साथ तस्वीर निकालती, तो कभी अपने डायरेक्टर पर डायट करने का दबाव डालती दिखीं. ''सर के लिए ककड़ी और गाजर लाओ. आप डायट का खयाल रखो सर! कुछ इस तरीके से आनंद पर सोनम धौंस जमाती हैं. सोनम बीच-बीच में लेखक हिमांशु शर्मा के साथ अपने डायलॉग का रिहर्सल करती रहीं, जिनके अनुसार रांझणा आशिकों के लिए इन्सपिरेशनल फिल्म होगी. ब्रेक के दौरान उन्होंने अपने मोबाइल पर पुराने गाने प्ले कर दिए. सोनम ने दार्शनिक अंदाज में कहा, ''मुझे कभी-कभी लगता है कि मैं इस दुनिया से बिलॉन्ग ही नहीं करती हूं. मुझे पुराने जमाने में पैदा होना चाहिए था. मुझे पुराने जमाने के गीत वगैरह बहुत अच्छे लगते हैं. अब सोनम-धनुष के साथ आनंद राय रांझणा का क्लाइमेक्स सीन फिल्माने जा रहे थे. हमने उनसे विदा लेना बेहतर समझा, क्योंकि न तो हम अपना और न ही आपका इस फिल्म का मजा किरकिरा करना चाहते थे.

चलिए मोहल्ला अस्सी के सेट पर (विशेष)

प्रख्यात फिल्मकार डॉ चन्द्र प्रकाश द्विवेदी की सनी देओल और साक्षी तंवर अभिनीत नई फ़िल्म  मोहल्ला अस्सी फिल्म के सेट की कुछ दिलचस्प बातें बाँट रहे  हैं रघुवेन्द्र सिंह

धोती-कुर्ता और कंधे पर अंगोछा, ललाट पर सूर्याकार चंदन का तिलक, काले फ्रेम का मोटा सा चश्मा, काली मोटी मूंछ, उल्टी मांग में सजे केश और पीठ की ओर लटकती केश की छोटी सी चुटिया... सनी देओल ने लार्जर देन लाइफ महानायक का अपना चोला उतारकर फेंक दिया है, और अब वे सिद्धांतवादी पंडा बनकर बनारस की एक पाठशाला में संस्कृत की कक्षा लगा रहे हैं. 

डॉ चन्द्र प्रकाश द्विवेदी की नई फिल्म है मोहल्ला अस्सी और इस फिल्म में सनी देओल ऐसे ही दिलचस्प अंदाज में नजर आएंगे. जाने-माने साहित्यकार काशीनाथ सिंह की चर्चित रचना काशी का अस्सी पर यह फिल्म आधारित है.

पिछले दिनों मोहल्ला अस्सी की शूटिंग की खातिर ऐसा लग रहा था कि बनारस कुछ दिनों के लिए मुंबई की फिल्मसिटी में शिफ्ट हो गया है. सेट डिजायनर भूपेन्द्र सिंह ने अपनी टीम के साथ मिलकर बनारस की गलियों और मोहल्ले का इतना सजीव सेट तैयार किया था कि लोगों को ऐसा ही भ्रम उत्पन्न हो रहा था. मोहल्ला अस्सी में पंडा बने सनी की पड़ाइन बनी हैं साक्षी तंवर. डॉ द्विवेदी ने बाइस दिन फिल्मसिटी में सनी, साक्षी और रवि किशन सहित दर्जनों कलाकारों की टीम के संग शूटिंग करने के पश्चात वाराणसी रवाना हो गए. 

वे काशी का अस्सी रचना में वर्णित मोहल्ला अस्सी और बनारस के अन्य घाटों को कैमरे में कैद करने के लिए धर्मनगरी वाराणसी पहुंचे. लगभग पच्चीस दिन के शेट्यूल में उन्होंने सनी देओल के साथ वाराणसी के मोहल्ला अस्सी, दशाश्वमेध, मणिकर्णिका और भोसले घाट आदि स्थानों पर शूटिंग की.

सनी देओल ने महज बयालीस दिन में मोहल्ला अस्सी फिल्म की शूटिंग पूरी कर दी. फिल्म के सेट पर उनका फोटोग्राफी का शौक भी सबको देखने का असवर मिला. गंगा नदी में नौका विहार के दौरान सनी ने फोटोग्राफी का लुत्फ उठाया. उन्होंने उत्साह के साथ बनारस को अपने कैमरे में कैद किया.
